Report: Dell delivers new XPS laptops with Nvidia Optimus graphics, HD Webcam + Photos

Dell hasn’t released laptops under the XPS brand alone (as opposed to the Studio XPS lineup) for some time, but the series is back with a vengeance, as the computing giant has introduced three new models today.
Offered in 14-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch display sizes, the new XPS notebooks all feature Nvidia Optimus graphics — which allow your system to switch between integrated and discrete graphics depending on the application being run — that are 3D ready via support for Nvida 3D Vision technology. They also come with a 1,280×720 Webcam that supports HD streaming using Skype, which Dell claims is a first for laptops.
The machines pack an LED-backlit LCD, and you can personalize the exterior of your XPS via the Dell Design Studio. They also are equipped with a USB 3.0 port and JBL-designed speakers, including a 12-watt subwoofer on the 15-inch and 17-inch models.
While Dell hasn’t made the new XPS laptops available on its Website yet, our sister site CNET reports that the starting configs for each screen size include an Intel Core i5-460M CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and GeForce 420M graphics. Pricing begins at $899 for the XPS 14, $849 for the XPS 15, and $949 for the XPS 17.

NEWS: HP: Finally ready to get serious about Palm?

Hewlett-Packard appears to adding some management heft to Palm in what could be a sign that it may be serious about this mobile device thing after all.

John Paczkowski at AllthingsD reports
that Ari Jaaksi, who recently left as head of Nokia’s MeeGo unit, will be going to Palm. Palm is also adding Victoria Coleman, who ran Samsung’s R&D center in San Jose.
These two hires indicate that the webOS and Palm may get some love. Paczkowski also notes that HP has been pulling internal expertise into the Palm orbit.
It’s about time. HP has been a bit quiet about its plans for Palm. Indeed, HP announced the acquisition of Palm in April and hasn’t said much since. Six months is an entire development cycle in mobile devices.
The most jarring indication that HP wasn’t all that sure about Palm came at the company’s big printer launch in New York City. First, HP executives gushed about a printing partnership with Apple and the iOS.  And then for good measure the printer unit features a 7-inch detachable tablet console on its high-end unit. That console happened to run on Android.
When I asked why there wasn’t one mention of the webOS, the reply was that HP would integrate it at some later date. Sure, webOS tablets are allegedly coming in 2011, but there’s not a lot of room for delay.  It’s one thing if a silo-ed unit at HP isn’t into Palm, but we haven’t heard much about roadmaps for devices or the OS.
Simply put, we’re still waiting for this slide to actually happen:
The smartphone market isn’t exactly standing still so maybe these new hires can prime the Palm pump a bit.

Review of Dell Vostro A860

Full review of Dell Vostro A860

An affordable option that will fit into any budget, the Dell Vostro A860 Laptop offers great mobility and connectivity for the individual who needs a little more versatility from a work computer. Recently offered at $399 through Dell as part of a late 2008 push, there's arguably no better computer for your buck.
The Vostro A860 offers three upgrade packages for more user customization. However, no unnecessary trial software is in the mix to clutter the hard drive or the desktop. The amply spaced 15.6-inch widescreen LCD display offers enough room to view multiple tasks and projects, with the ability to stream media or DVDs on the standard drive.

Dell Vostro A860 Tech Specs

The Vostro A860 comes with a lower-end Intel Celeron M processor at 2.16GHz and Vista Home Basic Service Pack 1. The optical drive offers a 24x CD Burner/DVD combo, with the option to upgrade to an 8x DVD+/-RW drive. The basic package offers users 1GB of memory, a 160GB SATA hard drive and the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. Out of the box, the laptop is wireless capable, and includes the standard one-year basic limited warranty.

Features

Ultimately, the Vostro A860 is perfect for transitioning from a desktop to a capable laptop, catering to those in need of the technological mobility. Aesthetically, the computer offers a low-profile look, without the overly glossy finish found on many black laptops. The full keyboard allows for maximized user efficiency and comfort, and with the four-cell battery, the weight is just over 5 lbs.
The only real drawback, when considering the unbeatable price, is the size and the power-pull of a four-cell Li-Ion battery. Yet, when reviewing the pros and cons, an under $400 price tag far outweighs the drawbacks to this entry-level laptop.

Dell Vostro A860 Technical Specifications

  • Processor Celeron M 2.16GHz
  • Memory 1GB DDR2
  • Harddrive 160GB
  • OS Vista Basic
  • Weight 5.4lbs
  • Screen 15.4 inches
  • Screen resolution 1366x768
  • Graphic Card Intel GMA X3100
  • Battery Life 2.5 hours
